INTRODUCTION
A group of Roman
Catholic men from Avo
n and Avon Lake, Ohio founded Father
Ragan Council
No. 3269 on January 15, 1950. The Council was named in memory of Fr.
Michael Ragan, who was an assistant at St. Mary’s Parish, Avon, for two
years after serving as a US Army chaplain during World War II. Fr.
Ragan died in an automobile accident on August 17, 1949.
The Council Hall, built in 1961, is located at 1783 Moore Road, Avon
(just north of Rt. 611, near the I-90 interchange). Council members
performed most of the construction work themselves.
True to its Columbian mission,
Father Ragan Council actively supports the Roman Catholic Parishes of
Avon and Avon Lake and their accompanying grade schools and parish
schools of religion. The council also supports local organizations
devoted to preserving the sanctity of life, serving the needs of the
developmentally disabled, and caring for individuals and families
facing terminal illness. The Council hosts or sponsors several events
for youth including a free throw contest, high school wrestling
tournament, and scholarship program.
Consistent with its Catholic identity, Father Ragan Council provides
its membership with spiritual development through receipt of the
sacraments, liturgy, retreats, and a Catholic speakers series. The
membership participates in a number of programs supporting vocations to
religious life.

Founder of the Order
Father Michael J. McGivney was a 29-year-old assistant pastor at St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, Conn., when he founded the Knights of Columbus in 1882. Father McGivney’s holiness, devotion to priestly ministry and work to protect family life provide a powerful spiritual influence for Knights, their family members and a growing number of other Catholics. His story must be read.
